금속공예가의 조명
"빛을 내는 사물"

갤러리 로얄은 20인의 금속공예가를 초대하여 각기 다른 조형언어로 풀어본 "빛을 내는 사물" 수제조명 전시회를 선보인다.

조명은 인간의 활동시간을 연장해 삶을 풍요롭게해 주었다. 사회적 활동을 확장하는데 이바지하였고, 밤에도 문화적 여가생활을 할 수 있는 물리적 시간을 제공하였다. 어떤 이에게는 공간을 꾸며주는 조형물로써, 한자리에 모인 가족에게는 따스한 마음과 대화의 시공간을 제공하는 소품으로써, 연인에게는 사랑스러운 분위기를 연출하는 사물로써 우리 주변에 존재한다.

특정 공간 속에서 조명은 공간을 나누거나 돋보이도록 빛으로 공간을 구성할 수 있게 해주며, 시간상으로는 연속성을 제공하는 매체가 되기도 한다. 이렇듯 시공간을 아우르는 조명은 금속공예가들에게 매력적인 사물로 인지되며 만들고 싶은 충동을 일으킨다. 조명은 활용하는 방법이나 장소는 조금씩 다르지만, 우리의 감성을 자극하는 멋진 기능성 사물임에 틀림없다.

작가들에게 조명은 작업공간을 밝히기 위해, 때로는 창작 분위기 조성을 위해 사용된다. 이들에게 조명은 분명 중요한 작업기구다. 작고 섬세한 장신구 가공과 보석세팅을 하는 장신구 작가에게나 거대한 조형물 작가에게나 조명은 작업 시 없어서는 안될 존재이다.

"조명과 함께할 수 있는 창의적 시간 속에 금속공예가는 어떤 조명을 연상하고 구상하였을까? 어떤 조형 언어를 가지고 생각을 정리하고 만들지 고민할까? 어떤 방법으로 조명을 만들까?" 궁금증을 유발하는 작품을 볼 수 있는 이번 전시를 위해 작가들은 다양한 생각과 제작과정으로 남다른 조명을 만들어 내었다.

이번 전시에 선보이는 작품 중에는 1879년 에디슨에 의해 발명된 필라멘트 진공관 백열등에 영감을 받아 만든 조명, 나무의 질감을 닮은 듯 포근한 자연의 모습을 담아내었지만 재료의 물성이 전혀 다른 조명, 살아있는 듯 존재감을 드러내며 색이 변하고 숨 쉬듯 움직여 생명체가 연상되는 조명, 틈새로 새어나와 햇살이 반짝이듯 작은 눈부심을 주는 조명, 빛의 갇힘을 해방하고 싶어 틈을 만들어 그 자유로움을 선보이는 조명, 거대한 산과 물결의 흐름이 느껴지는 조명, 조명 속에 어둠을 품고 있어 깊이를 알 수 없는 조명 등이 있다.

하나밖에 없는 독특한 조명을 볼 수 있는 "빛을 내는 사물" 기획전을 통해 그들만의 신선한 생각을 담은 수제조명을 함께 공유하는 시간이 되길 희망한다.

The lighting of metal craftsmen _ “Luminous Objects”.

 

Gallery Royal presents a handmade lighting exhibition “Luminous Objects”. This exhibition displays the aesthetic value of metal forms interpreted by twenty skilled metal craftsmen.

 

Lighting allows us to extend the time of human activity and therefore enriches our lives. Our social activities can be expanded through lighting. Lighting also contributes to our ability to experience cultural and leisurely activities even at night Lighting provides and essentially facilitates as: a piece of three-dimensional sculpture, an area for families to gather and share the warm ambience of light, and lastly lighting can set the mood for romance.

 

Lighting has a few special qualities. It can divide space by the virtue of its rays, and provides continuation of time. Lighting is a blend of time and space. Metal craftsmen feel the urge to be creative with this. Lighting is certainly a functional object. By taking advantage of the diverse utilization of lighting, our senses can be stimulated.

 

Light is used to light the work-space of artists and for the composition of a creative atmosphere. The importance of lighting equipment is clear. It is indispensable object for jewelers who carve small and delicate jewelry. It is even an important factor for sculptors who create giant sculptures – without lighting the sculptor cannot create.

 

“How can a light be created into an inventive object within their given time frame?  How can they compose their thoughts and what kind of artistic language would be needed to create a design? In what way would they make the lighting?” These are the questions that were raised in creating exceptional lighting. They used a wide variety of processes for this project which would arouse curiosity.

 

Among the works of this exhibition there are pieces inspired by: incandescent filament vacuum tube invented by Edison in 1879; lighting that shows the texture of wood with its natural appearance, but is significantly different from the properties of the material within; lighting that seemed reminiscent of living creatures changing colors and moving while it breathes becoming a living presence; lighting that gives a small glare like sunlight from the space underneath a closed door, this light frees itself from the crack and releasing itself from being trapped; lighting that features huge mountains and the flowing waves; and lighting that is bottomless because of the darkness in the lighting, etc…

 

I take this opportunity to share some fresh ideas of handmade lighting through the exhibition, “Luminous Objects”.  It is my hope you can see the unique light within you.
